CBS news had a feature on newborns that was picked up by the aol newservice. And there is a discussion of what babies learn in utero. AOL News – What Newborns Are Really Thinking

As an example, researchers had mothers read "The Cat in the Hat" to their babies while in-utero. Then, after birth, the babies’ preference always seemed to be the book they had already heard and were familiar with. Experts say this also relates to music and is important evidence of how much babies learn while inside the womb. They’re not just hanging around, Kennedy says, they’re taking in as much as they can.

    from my own experience i know this is true. i had a wonderful dog that barked (alot!) and when my baby son was born, he seemed aware of the dog by his barking. he slept through some serious barking and was never startled by it. it seemed that baby was born loving that dog. true story.
