Msgr. Smith, professor at Dunwoodie seminary and highly regarded expert in medical ethics. Msgr. was a fine speaker with a dry sense of humor.
One of his favorite lines was "before social engineering comes verbal engineering."

He was one of the leading Catholic voices in the U.S. on medical ethics and was often quoted in the Catholic and secular media on the hot-button issues of the day, such as the Terri Schiavo life-support case, stem-cell research, all aspects of the abortion debate, reproductive technology and cloning.
"He was a top-notch moral theologian, highly regarded in the United States and in Rome," said Monsignor Joseph Giandurco, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Suffern, who served with Smith on the seminary faculty for 12 years. "He corresponded with Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who is now of course Pope Benedict XVI, on a number of sensitive issues over the years."
