Both sought to protect women&#39;s rights but were on opposite sides of a cultural battle that has shaped the past half-century. In the Civil War, the two sides were symbolized by &quot;The Blue&quot; and &quot;The Gray.&quot; The sides in today&#39;s &quot;civil war&quot; could be symbolized by &quot;The Brown&quot; and &quot;The Gray.&quot;<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Helen Gurley Brown, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=2&amp;ved=0CB0QqQIwAQ&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.usatoday.com%2Flife%2Fpeople%2Fobit%2Fstory%2F2011-08-02%2Fhelen-gurley-brown-cosmopolitan-dies-at-90%2F57039456%2F1&amp;ei=lx0sULSmE8aJ6AGo5IAY&amp;usg=AFQjCNHiy0cyeoBrYMuD9MGMGsF7Q1FkLQ\" target=\"popup729\">writer<\/a> of <em>Sex and The Single Girl<\/em> and for 32 years <br \/>the editor of <em>Cosmopolitan<\/em> magazine, was in the vanguard of a movement <br \/>that insisted women would only achieve equality through &quot;reproductive rights.&quot; <br \/>What that meant was that women should be free to sleep with whomever they <br \/>desired with the inevitable consequence of aborting unplanned children conceived <br \/>along the way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Nellie Gray, a lawyer who walked away from a successful <br \/>career to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/religion\/story\/2012-08-14\/nellie-gray-march-founder\/57055526\/1\" target=\"popup729\">found the March for Life<\/a>, had a starkly different view of <br \/>women&#39;s rights. To Gray, human rights could not be broken down to their <br \/>component parts. Everyone enjoyed the same right to life bestowed by the creator <br \/>and guaranteed by the Constitution. Abortion both broke her heart and steeled <br \/>her resolve.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Both stood for human rights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The difference between &quot;The Brown&quot; and &quot;The Gray,&quot; was not, <br \/>however, what many would say it was, namely, that &quot;The Brown&quot; stands for the <br \/>women and &quot;The Gray&quot; stands for the babies. The real difference is that &quot;The <br \/>Brown&quot; thinks you can separate the two and &quot;The Gray&quot; says you can&#39;t. Both <br \/>claimed they were serving women.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Brown, and the movement she represented, believed that <br \/>women are served by more access to &quot;services&quot; such as abortion, which frees them <br \/>from the burden of carrying and raising a child.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Gray, and the movement she represented, believed that you <br \/>can stand both for women and for the children in their wombs, and that their <br \/>destinies are intertwined: Loving and serving either means loving and serving <br \/>both.<\/p>\n<p>Hit the link for the complete op ed.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An important column and only 11 paragraphs.
