We have highlighted a document from the 2007 Latin America Bishops Conference well worth referencing in the future.<\/strong><\/span> <\/p>\n

\n\"Pope<\/a><\/p>\n

\nON ABORTION<\/strong><\/div>\n

\n– In 2007 Cardinal Bergoglio stated, \u201cWe aren\u2019t in agreement with the
\ndeath penalty,\u201d he said, \u201cbut in Argentina we have the death penalty. A
\nchild conceived by the rape of a mentally ill or retarded woman can be
\ncondemned to death.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2007, following Pope Benedict\u2019s meeting with Latin American bishops,
\nthe Fifth General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America produced a
\njoint statement, known as the Aparecida Document; it was presented by
\nCardinal Bergoglio himself.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAPARECIDA DOCUMENT<\/strong><\/div>\n

\n
\nParagraph 436: We hope that legislators, heads of government, and health
\nprofessionals, conscious of the dignity of human life and of the
\nrootedness of the family in our peoples, will defend and protect it from
\nthe abominable crimes of abortion and euthanasia; that is their
\nresponsibility. Hence, in response to government laws and provisions
\nthat are unjust in the light of faith and reason, conscientious
\nobjection should be encouraged. We must adhere to \u201ceucharistic
\ncoherence,\u201d that is, be conscious that they cannot receive holy
\ncommunion and at the same time act with deeds or words against the
\ncommandments, particularly when abortion, euthanasia, and other grave
\ncrimes against life and family are encouraged.  This responsibility
\nweighs particularly over legislators, heads of government, and health
\nprofessionals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nOn the Need for the Church to Evangelize:<\/strong><\/div>\n

\n"We need to avoid the spiritual sickness of a church that is wrapped up
\nin its own world: when a church becomes like this, it grows sick. It is
\ntrue that going out on to the street implies the risk of accidents
\nhappening, as they would to any ordinary man or woman. But if the church
\nstays wrapped up in itself, it will age. And if I had to choose between
\na wounded church that goes out on to the streets and a sick, withdrawn
\nchurch, I would definitely choose the first one."
\n <\/p>\n

\nOn Unwed Mothers<\/strong><\/div>\n

 
\n"In our ecclesiastical region there are priests who don't baptize the
\nchildren of single mothers because they weren't conceived in the
\nsanctity of marriage<\/a>.
\nThese are today's hypocrites. Those who criticize the church. Those who
\nseparate the people of God from salvation. And this poor girl who,
\nrather than returning the child to sender, had the courage to carry it
\ninto the world, must wander from parish to parish so that it's
\nbaptized!"

\nOn the Elderly and Infirm<\/strong>:<\/div>\n

\n\u201cToday,\u201d he wrote, \u201celderly people are discarded when, in reality, they
\nare the seat of wisdom of the society. The right to life means allowing
\npeople to live and not killing, allowing them to grow, to eat, to be
\neducated, to be healed, and to be permitted to die with dignity.\u201d  \u2013
