New Jersey\u2019s capital city became the latest battleground in the culture war over abortion this weekend as Trenton Police arrested four pro-life activists who protested inside a local Planned Parenthood clinic.<\/a><\/p>\nPlanned Parenthood says the protesters conducted a campaign of \u201cintimidation and harassment aimed at patients seeking health care,\u201d but the pro-life activists say they operated with love in an effort to save \u201cunborn children scheduled to be killed by abortionists.\u201d<\/p>\n
Welcome to the City of Trenton, a historic municipality that features a Planned Parenthood health center on the 400 block of East State Street. Pro-life diehards entered the facility about 9 a.m. Saturday to conduct a \u201cRed Rose Rescue\u201d \u2014 an unapologetic action intended to dissuade pregnant women from seeking abortions.<\/p>\n
Once inside, the pro-lifers distributed red roses to patients who were scheduled for abortions, according to Monica Miller, director of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society. A card was attached to each flower imprinted with pro-life literature \u2014 \u201cA new life, however tiny, brings the promise of unrepeatable joy\u201d \u2014 and phone numbers of local-area pregnancy help centers.<\/p>\n
In addition to distributing roses, the pro-lifers talked to Planned Parenthood patients with \u201cwords of encouragement,\u201d according to the protesters. Planned Parenthood, which delivers reproductive health care, sex education and information to millions of people worldwide, quickly called 9-1-1 to evict the protesters.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen police arrived on the scene, pro-lifers attempted to continue conversation with women or sat on the floor praying quietly or singing hymns until they were placed under arrest,\u201d according to a news release issued by Citizens for a Pro-Life Society.<\/p>\n
Multiple protesters inside the building refused to leave despite being asked numerous times to vacate the premises about 9:20 a.m. Saturday. Trenton Police removed and arrested a total of four defendants, charging them each with trespassing, according to Lt. Peter Szpakowski.<\/p>\n
Police did not immediately release information on the identities of the defendants, but the pro-life group identified the four Red Rose Rescuers as Fidelis Moscinski, Patricia Woodworth, Will Goodman and Matthew Connolly. The group says it engaged in \u201ccivil disobedience.\u201d<\/p>\n
